The primary relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.

Problem: You recieve the error "The primary relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" when trying to log into your computer.

Solution: Unjoin the computer from the domain, then rejoin it.

Instructions:

  1. Log on as local administrator account.  An IOD IT Person will have the login credentials if you do not know them.
  2. Click on the Start menu, right click on Computer, and select Properties
  3. Under the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings area, select Change Settings
  4. Next to where it says "To rename this computer or change its domain or workgroup, click Change.", click the Change... button.
  5. Under where it says "Member Of", change the selection to Workgroup, and enter WORKGROUP in the text field.
  6. Click OK, then click OK again, and restart your computer.
  7. Ensure that you are hardwired into the network in either the Durham or Concord office, and log back in as a local administrator
  8. Click on the Start menu, right click on Computer, and select Properties
  9. Under the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings area, select Change Settings
  10. Next to where it says "To rename this computer or change its domain or workgroup, click Change.", click the Change... button.
  11. Under where it says "Member Of", change the selection to Domain, and enter ad.unh.edu in the text field.
  12. Enter your UNH username and password when prompted.
  13. Change the name of the computer to something unique, but please prefix it with IOD- if this is an IOD-owned computer.
  14. Click OK, then click OK again, and restart your computer.
  15. Log back in as your user account

    If this continues to happen, there is a hotfix for this issue, but it is not recommended it be applied unless this problem frequently occurs: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976494
